OBITUARY OF MRS. ABRAHAM
We take the following obituary of Mrs. Abraham, mother of Mr. Charles Abraham of this place, from The Mitchell Gazette of Tuesday, November 30, 1915:
Funeral services over the body of Mrs. Clarinda M. Abraham were conducted Sunday afternoon at the First Baptist church in the presence of a large throng of relatives and friends. Mrs. Abraham breathed her last early Thursday evening, November 25, at her home at 521 Main street north.
Rev. Robert Lincoln Kelley, pastor of the First Baptist church, conducted the services in impressive fashion. Mr. William Gordon Brackett sang beautifully, according to special requests, "Face to Face." Members of the Woman's Relief Corps attended the services in a body. Mrs. Abraham was one of the first members of the local organization.
Rev. Mr. Kelley told of Mrs. Abraham in a manner sincere and touching. Her life had been lived truly and well. She had proved a benediction to her friends. When death extended its call, she was ready, having lived to the noble age of 83 years.
Miss Clarinda M. Rowlee was born April 1, 1832 at Oswego, N.Y. She was baptized in the Susquehanna river when 16 years of age by Rev. Jacob Knapp, who later performed the marriage ceremony when she was married to John Abraham on December 18, 1949, in Rockford, Ill., where she had moved with her parents and where she retained her membership in the Baptist church.
Mr. and Mrs. Abraham moved to South Dakota in 1883, settling on the farm 12 miles northwest of Mitchell. In 1892 the family moved to Mitchell, where Mr. Abraham died in 1899 and was buried in Graceland cemetery. Mrs. Abraham
was 83 years, seven months and twenty-three day old on Wednesday. She had lived in Mitchell for 31 years.
Six daughters and two sons survive her: Mrs. Frances Dyche and Mrs. Alice Fraser of Mitchell; Mrs. Maude Emmons and Miss Jessie Abraham of Chicago; Mrs. Fred Bates of Watertown; Mrs. A.J. Fonda of Rockford, Il., William Abraham of Minnetoka, Canada and Charles Abraham of Walnut, Illinois.
All of the children but one were able to be present at the services. William Abraham of Minnetonis, Canada was delayed from getting here until about 5 o'clock Sunday afternoon.
Burial of Mrs. Abraham occurred at Graceland cemetery. The pall-bearers were the following members of the local post of G.A.R.: J.H. Nolt, George A. Johnston, Martin Boice, S. Cattrell, Charles Palmer and W.H. Webster. Mrs. Abraham's body was interred beside that of her husband, John Abraham, Mitchell resident and business man, who passed away in 1899.
