Claude Evans Allen was my father and he was also my hero. He joined the National Guards when he was a young boy. Several years later, before the guards were activated to serve in WWII, my father joined the active Army. He was stationed in various locations: Ft. Benning, Ga.; Ft. Carson, Colorado; a base in California; Durham, NC. He was sent to Europe in December, 1944, with the 89th Infantry Division. At that time he had already been promoted to the rank of Major. He returned from Europe in the spring of 1945, re-enlisted in the Army, and was sent once again to Ft. Benning, Georgia. In 1947 he was stationed at Oxford, Mississippi, where he taught ROTC at Ole Miss. By 1948 he was stationed at Ft. Jackson, SC. In 1949 he was sent to Camp McGill in Japan. He was in the 1st Cavalry Division by this time. Within a year of arriving in Japan, the Korean War started. He was sent to Korea in July, 1950. While stationed in Korea he was acting battalion commander off and on several times while the battalion commander was recovering from pneumonia. In February, 1951, he was made battalion commander. He was killed in action March 2, 1951. His promotion to Lt. Colonel, which he had been told about before his death, was posthumously made over 30 years later.

Lt. Colonel Claude Evans Allen was awarded the Bronze Star, two Silver Stars, and a Purple Heart. He was posthumously awarded the Legion of Merit within months of his death.
