Edwin Fields Hodge was killed in an accident with his horse while herding cattle, at the home of Mose Westbrook in Crockett County, Texas. He was buried at Sherwood Cemetery, Irian County, Texas. His sister, Minnie Letitia (Hodge) Dameron used to say that she remembered the day he was killed. They could see a group of cowboys coming from far in the distance; they could barely discern that the cowboys were leading a horse with a body strapped across the saddle. Her father, Robert A. Hodge, must have had a premonition, because he said, "They're bringing in Fields."

Eneumerated in the 1880 US Federal Census in San Saba County, Texas.

The fourth born son/child of the Cumberland Presbyterian curcuit riding minister, the Reverend Robert Archibald Hodge and his wife, Nancy "Nannie" Susan Smith Hodge.
