HARRISON -- Louis Joseph "Jim" DeVito was born Feb. 19, 1923, in Cumberland, Wis., to Sam and Mary DeVito. He married Mary Alice Raney Feb. 13, 1947. He served 26 years in the military from 1942-1968, retiring as a lieutenant colonel. He was a combat veteran of both WWII and the Korean War. During his years in the military he received the following: Silver Star for bravery in the Korean Conflict, Combat Infantry Badge, Army Commendation Medal (2), American Theatre Medal, European Theatre Medal, WWII Victory Medal, WWII Occupation Medal, American Defense Medal, United Nations Medal, Korean Service Medal, Reserve Forces Medal and the Legion of Merit.

He retired to Harrison in 1970 and opened Bear Creek Springs Trout Farm and Gift Shop with partners Gene and Laverne Raney. In 1986 he opened DeVito's Restaurant with his sons.

He was very active in Arkansas tourism. He has served on the boards of the Ozark Mountain Region, Scenic Highway 7 Association, Harrison Advertising and Promotion Commission, Arkansas Tourism Development Foundation, Arkansas Hospitality Association, Travel Council Board of Directors, and the Harrison Chamber of Commerce. He received the Henry Award (Arkansas Tourism Person of the Year), Tourism Volunteer of the Year Award, Arkansas Travel Council Silver Cup for Tourism, Small Business Person of the Year, and Tourism Hall of Fame Award.

He was a member of Mary Mother of God Church and the Knights of Columbus.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Alice; sons, James DeVito of Eureka Springs, Steve DeVito, Chris DeVito, and Joe DeVito of Harrison; and his daughter, Kathy Thomason, also of Harrison; grandchildren, Aaron Thomason, Brandy Thomason, Brandon DeVito, Nicholas DeVito, Michael DeVito, Matthew DeVito, and Nathaniel DeVito of Harrison; and his step-grandchildren, Elizabeth Staneart and Lindsay Hennarichs; brothers, Sam DeVito of St. Paul, Minn., Frank DeVito of Las Vegas, Nev. Ralph DeVito of St. Paul, Minn., and Eugene DeVito of Minneapolis, Minn.; and his sisters, Mary Jane Etter of St. Paul, Minn., Phyllis England of Maplewood, Minn., and Patricia DeVito of St. Paul, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandchild, Bryan Thomason; a daughter-in-law, Susan DeVito; two brothers, Angelo DeVito and Anthony DeVito; and a sister, Angeline Williams.

Friends may call at Holt Memorial Chapel after 1 p.m. Sunday. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday with rosary scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Mary Mother of God Church with the Rev. Gregory Hart officiating. Pallbearers will be his sons and Frank DeVito and Thomas Etter. Burial will follow in Maplewood Cemetery/ . Memorials may be made to Sanctuary or Mary Mother of God Catholic Church Building Fund.
