She was the daughter of Joseph David Akins and his wife Elizabeth Ida, nee Armstrong.
Florence first married Archie George Giacometti, who died in 1944. She then married John Peter Hartlage, Sr., who became a widower in 1953.

Her August 12, 1984 Louisville Courier-Journal obituary:
Mrs. Florence Akins Hartlage, 77, died Friday at Humana Hospital Suburban.
She was a member of Moose Lodge Auxiliary 5.
Survivors include three sons, John P. Hartlage, Jr. of North Adams, Mass., Kenneth J. Hartlage of Crestwood and Andrew C. Hartlage; two daughters, Mrs. Eva Marie Love of Crestwood and Mrs. Rita Dolores Wolff; a brother, Joseph Akins; 25 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Matthias Catholic Church, 2200 Dixie Highway, with burial in St. Louis Cemetery.
Visitation at Owen Funeral Home, 5317 Dixie Highway, will be after noon Sunday.
