Reverend Bert Lloyd Tapley, 89, of Columbus died Tuesday, June 30, 2010 at his home. Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 3, 2010 at 2:00pm at the Bethlehem Baptist Church in Warthen with burial in the Church Cemetery. Rev. Tim Powell and Rev. Vernon Jordan will officiate. Reverend Tapley was born October 12, 1920 in Blaine, Maine, the son of the late Eugene Hale and the late Amber Rees Tapley. Reverend Tapley was a retired World War II Veteran having served in the Army Air Corp North African and European Campaigns. He was ordained into the Ministry of Christ in 1953 at Tennille Baptist Church in Tennille, Georgia. He was a graduate of Mercer University in Macon, Georgia, and received his Masters of Divinity in 1957 from Crozier Theological Seminary in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He served Baptist churches in Georgia, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Alabama before retiring to Warthen, Georgia. He moved to Columbus, Georgia after his wife's death to be with his daughter and family. There, he was a member of Schomburg Baptist Church. Reverend Tapley was a loving father, husband, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He will join in Heaven his parents; his beloved wife, Kay McDonald Tapley; his daughter, April McMichaels; his granddaughter, Lisa Cole; his grandson, Mark Cole; and his brother, Keith Tapley. He will be greatly missed by his daughter, Suzanne Tapley West, and her husband, James R. West, of Columbus; grandson Christopher H. West and his wife, Marissa, of Columbus; grandson Jeremy F. West of Grundy, Virginia; grandson Mac W. Cole II and his wife, Cheri, of Bremen, Georgia; granddaughters Lynessa Dae West of Columbus and Ashley Cole of Bremen, Georgia; his sister, Maxine Badger and her husband, Hal, of Hartland, Maine; and several nieces and nephews. He developed many relationships and was blessed by the staff at Gardens at Calvary. He was also blessed to have received care from the staff at John B. Amos Cancer Center, The Medical Center, and Columbus Hospice. In lieu of flowers, Bert requests donations be made instead to John B. Amos Cancer Center (1831 Fifth Avenue; Columbus, GA 31904), American Cancer Society P.O. Box 632 Sandersville, Ga. 31082 or to the Columbus Hospice (7020 Moon Road; Columbus, GA 31909), or the charity of your choice. The family will receive friends Friday from 5 to 7pm at the May and Smith Funeral Home in Sandersville.
