1st Wife: Ruby LaRue Stafford (1898-1982) m. 24 March 1917 in Dayton, Montgomery Co., OH. Earl & Ruby had 2 daughters, Dutchess Louise Hempstead and Vivian Janet Hempstead. Div. 30 Sept. 1922, Oregon City, Clackamas Co., OR.

2nd Wife: Lydia Dether Pettit. They m. 6 June 1928, Los Angeles, California (see below for further details). Earl & Lydia had 2 sons, Robert Bruce (aka Earl George Hempstead, Jr.) and Ronald Jay Hempstead.

3rd Wife: Mildred Thompson Davis (Davis adopted her) m. 1946. Mildred is buried w/him.

His parents divorced ca 1905-1910. The 1915 NY State Census finds Earl and his mother living with her sister, Dora Hall and her husband John in Utica, Oneida Co., NY. Earl Hempstead was a bell hop at the Utica Hotel.

In 1916, Earl traveled to the Tampa, Florida area to work as a field hand in orange orchards. He boarded at the Stafford home in Seffner where he met his future wife, Ruby LaRue Stafford.

Earl George Hempstead registered for the WWI draft in Kansas City, Missouri on June 5, 1917. He stated that he was born 28 Dec. 1894 in Herkimer, New York. He was living at 1631 Bellvue, Kansas City, MO. He was listed as a "handyman", but unemployed. He registered for a "religious exemption" based on his church's beliefs (Seventh-day Adventist). He is described as being of medium height, medium build, gray eyes, & brown hair. He was married.

In 1917, Earl & Ruby were working on a potato/hog farm in Monte Vista in Rio Grande Co., Colorado. Their daughter, Dutchess, was born there in Nov. 1917.

1920 U.S. Census for Denver, Colorado finds Earl, wife Ruby and daughter Dutchess Hempstead either in a hotel or boarding house operated by Oscar A. Bennett:

Earl m. Lydia Dether 6 June 1928, Los Angeles, California. Her parents were George Dether & Justina Dether. Lydia was b. PA. They were married by a Calif. Supreme Court Judge Marshall M. McComb. George Dether was b. Russia; Justina in Germany. Earl & Lydia both resided at the same address in Los Angeles, Los Angeles Co., CA (3906 Brighton Ave) (ck to see if they were staying w/his mother and daughter). This was Lydia's first marriage.


In 1928, Earl & Lydia traveled to Havana, Cuba where he worked for awhile in hotels. He was there when Charles Lindbergh flew in for a visit.

1930 U.S. Census finds Earl and Lydia living in a boarding house in Astoria, Queens, NY. Earl was employed as a bell hop at Manhattan hotels and was an early employee when the Waldorf-Astoria opened in 1931 on Park Avenue in Manhattan. The family has a photograph of the entire Waldorf-Astoria staff taken in 1931.

By 1933, Earl & Lydia had returned to Oregon. His daughter, Dutchess, was living in Oregon City, Oregon with his mother, Florence. After the divorce from Ruby, Florence raised Dutchess.

In 1935, Earl, Lydia & Earl, Jr. were living in Portland, Oregon.

Earl, Sr. and Mildred were devout Seventh-Day Adventists.
