Christina Johns Hempstead was his stepmother. See NY census records up to 1892 for the name of his mother, Catharine "Kate" Hempstead, b. ca 1829 Ireland on his father's memorial.


First wife: Florence Hilts (1870-1942) m. 1 Sept. 1893 in Little Falls, Herkimer Co., NY.;

Second wife: Ruth Cushman

George and Florence had 2 sons, Earl George Hempstead (1893-1990) and Donald Bruce Hempstead (1895-1977) Earl lived many years in Coos Bay, OR and is buried there. Don lived many years in Richmond, Alameda Co., CA and is buried in St. Joseph's Cemetery in San Pablo, CA.

The 1900 U.S. Census for Schenectady, Schenectady Co., NY finds George living in a boarding house on Washington Ave. Interestingly, this census shows that his mother was born in Germany. Still trying to figure out whether that was his actual mother or a stepmother. George was single and working as a machinist.

The 1905 NY State Census shows George living with his wife Florence and their children in Schenectady, NY. He is working as a machinist.

Sometime between 1905 & 1910, George & Florence divorced.

The 1910 & 1920 U.S. Censuses for Greenfield, Franklin Co., Mass. find George and his wife Ruth. Her birth date is listed as 1872.

George was cremated and his cremains placed in his parents plot.

Note: In a 1900 U.S. Census for Rotterdam Township, Schenectady, NY is also another Hempstead family: Amos E. and Mary Hempstead w/7 children. Amos was born Sept. 1836 in NY and Mary Aug. 1840 also in NY. Not sure if this family is related to George's father's family.
