Chester W. Davis died in North Java, Sunday July 30, 1899. The deceased for years has been a successful merchant, but failing health forced him to retire from the active labor in November last. A winter passed in the South did not afford permanent relief, consequently he with his family returned to his home in this village about the first of April. He has been a great sufferer, and now has earned his rest. Aside from the sorrowing family there are hots of friends who mourn the loss of one whom they esteemed and highly respected.

Mr. Davis was born in Varysburg, September 6th, 1837. When a young man he went west for the first time, and was in the West most of the time until 1870, when he returned and entered mercantile business in this county. In 1889 he again went to California, returning in 1892. He has been in business at Strykersvillle, North Java, and Varysburg. he married in 1893 Miss Ellen Waterman of Bennington, and to them were born two children, Arthur W. and Emma.
