Son of Georgia Little and Mary Etta Gray. Died in world war 2 at age 32.∼News reached Elkhart last Friday that Porter L. Little, 28, a private in the army and stationed in California, had been killed by a premature explosion from a 60-millimeter gun during drill work.
Private Little was one of five soldiers who were killed by the exploding shell, which happened near La Mesa, San Diego county, California. Mrs. Little, a widow since the death of her husband, George Little, nine years ago received an official message late Friday announcing the son's death. The family home is seven miles southwest of Elkhart.
Surviving are his mother and seven brothers, Allie, Fay, Homer, Herbert, Doy, Kenneth, and Wayne Little, the latter stationed at Fort Benning, Georgia.
Private Little entered the army about two months ago and was assigned to duty on the west coast. As a youth he attended the Antrim school. His father was an uncle of Mrs. Lee Parks of Elkhart.
The body is expected to arrive Friday morning and funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 4 o'clock at the Antrim Cemetery.
The entire community deeply regrets that such an accident occurred and that it claimed the life of one of our young men in the service of his country.
