Mr. DeRoy was born June 25, 1919 in Jefferson County, Alabama to Maude Nail DeRoy and Amos DeRoy, Sr.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II aboard the USS Patuxent. After his military service, he spent 42 years with Stockham Valve & Fitting Company of Birmingham, Alabama, including seven years as vice president and general manager of the Rockingham Stainless Steel plant in Rockingham, North Carolina. He retired form Stockham in
1982.

He played amateur baseball for company teams that twice won the National Amateur Baseball Federation Championship in the 1950's.

He was survived by his wife, Pauline Cox DeRoy, one son James DeRoy, Jr. and four daughters, Sue DeRoy Young, Jacque DeRoy Mayo, Cheryl DeRoy Lee and Bettye DeRoy Watts. One sister Anna Ruth DeRoy and one brother Amos DeRoy. 11 grandchildren - Tammy McClelland, Dow McClelland, Eric McClelland, Beth Mayo, Stan Mayo, Martha Anne Lee, Beth Lee, Jason Karr, Christopher Watts, Julie DeRoy and Amy DeRoy.
