Lavonne Verhey, 87, Hills, formerly of Beaver Creek, died Monday, June 28, 2010, at the Tuff Memorial Home in Hills.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 2, at the First Presbyterian Church in Beaver Creek. Burial will follow at the Beaver Creek Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 1, at the Hartquist Funeral Home – Engebretson Chapel in Luverne.

Lavonne Bjerk was born May 24, 1923, to Ole and Mathilda (Skyberg) Bjerk in Beaver Creek. She graduated from Beaver Creek High School and continued her education at Nettleton Business College in Sioux Falls, S.D.

She married Cornelius "Cornie" Verhey on Dec. 17, 1954, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Hills. They lived on farms in Beaver Creek Township before moving into Beaver Creek in 1962. She worked at the Beaver Creek State Bank and then at Herman Motors in Luverne. She later became self-employed as a tax accountant and operated her business out of her home. In her retirement she remained active helping family and friends with their taxes. She became a resident of Tuff Memorial Home in Hills in November 2009.

Mrs. Verhey was an active member of First Presbyterian Church in Beaver Creek, where she taught Sunday School, was a member of Women's Circle and served as a board member. She was a member of the Royal Neighbors and the Luverne Ladies Auxiliary. She enjoyed photography and her collections.

She is survived by her husband, Cornie; four sons, Cornell Verhey, Beaver Creek, Robert (Barbara) Verhey, Luverne, Rodney (Cami) Verhey, Hills, and Vincent Verhey, Beaver Creek; nine grandchildren; and a dear friend, Marty Vermeer, Luverne.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter, Joyce Moore; and her sister, Ione Backus.
