Nellie Martha Gibson Harvey, 85, of Brighton Gardens, died Saturday, August 29, 2009.
Born in Anderson County, she was a daughter of the late Elliott L. and Bessie James Gibson and widow of A.J. Harvey. Mrs. Harvey was a member of Taylors First Baptist Church and served as a Sunday School Teacher for over 25 years.
Mrs. Harvey, along with Clarence Bauknight and Tom Roe, organized Builder Marts of America, where she served in various capacities including Vice Chairman of the Board. Mrs. Harvey formerly served on the Board of Trustees for Anderson University and volunteered for the Greenville Literacy Association.
Surviving are one daughter, Martha H. Clardy, of Easley; one son, Dr. Thomas E. Harvey and wife Kathleen, of Greenville; four grandchildren, Dr. Marc C. Harvey and wife Erika, Karyn E. Brooker and husband Paul, James Caleb Clardy and wife Allison, and Andrea C. Johnston and husband Kirk; seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Bessie Wigington and husband Elihu; four brothers, Nelson Gibson, Henry Gibson, Horace Gibson and wife Rosa, and Floyd Gibson and wife Jo; sister-in-law, Jean Gilstrap; and 6 half-brothers and sisters.
She was preceded in death by one son, Stephen Jerome Harvey, and one brother, Lloyd Gibson.
Visitation will be held Tuesday from 6 until 8 p.m. at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown. The Funeral Service will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. in the Chapel of Taylors First Baptist Church. Interment to follow the service in Graceland Cemetery West.
