ALLEN CRAWFORD ROBERTS, 78 went to meet his maker Sunday, October 16, 2005. He was a member of Hickory Withe Baptist Church. Allen was born November 8, 1926, to Meade Anderson and Bertha Allen Roberts in Star City, AR. The family moved to Memphis in the late 30's. He served in the Merchant Marines during World War II. He was a 1945 graduate of Tech High. Allen worked his way through college by delivering milk for Sealtest Dairy during the era of leather hats and box ties. He made some nieces and nephews very happy by letting them believe they were "driving" the truck. Allen and his wife, Doe, became avid square dancers in the later 50's and later he became a professional square dance caller. He was instrumental in the introduction of public campsites to Shelby Farms. He also facilitated the building of the Eads Community Center. Allen was the founder of Holiday Auto Parts and Security Builder. He was a pilot, a 32nd Degree Mason and a Beekeeper. Over the years he spent many happy hours operating his ham radio. Allen could name any tree or wildflower just by looking and bird watching was one of his great pleasures. He enjoyed reading books by Clive Cussler, the Harry Potter books, fishing, traveling the world, gardening, visiting family and especially time with his wife of 11 years, Esther, and their little dog, Sugar. His first wife, Doe Roberts; his sister, Jean Simmons; his brother, James Meade Roberts and wife Marian; and his parents preceded him in death. His is survived by his loving wife, Esther Roberts of Arlington, TN; his sister, Wilhelmina Barber and husband Ken of Fairhope, AL; his stepchildren, Pat and husband, Larry Long of Arlington, TN; Larry Hammons and wife, Dee of Memphis TN; three step-grandchildren; two step-great grandchildren; nine nieces and nephews; 21 great nieces and nephews; and 17 great great nieces and nephews. He was a loving son, brother, husband and uncle. He was know by many as "Uncle Allen" and will be missed by all.
