Sarah Rice/King was born May 16th, 1699 in Sudbury, Massachusetts, a daughter of Samuel Rice/King and Abigail Clapp. Her father was born in 1667 as Samuel Rice, youngest son of Samuel Rice, Sr. and Elizabeth King. His mother Elizabeth King died shortly after his birth, and he was given to his uncle Peter King and his wife to raise. He was often referred to in town records as Samuel King alias Rice, or vice versa. He married Abigail Clapp in 1693 and they had nine children including Sarah. Samuel died in March 1713, and Abigail in July of the same year leaving their young family orphaned. All of these children used "King, alias Rice" as their surname in town records. John Rice was named as their guardian. His son Moses Rice later married Sarah in 1719. Later that year Moses's father John Rice died and Moses was named guardian for the remaining minor Rice/King children (his wife's younger siblings).
Sarah and Moses Rice were the first settlers of Charlemont. They had a family of seven children: Samuel, Abigail, Aaron, Dinah, Sylvanus, Tamar, and Artemas Rice. Her husband Moses was killed by Indians in 1755 while in his field plowing corn. He was buried on the family farm. Sarah lived with her son Aaron's family on the original homestead until her death in 1788.
