Miss Mary D. Schmalzried, 60, widely known Kansas educator for 36 years, resident of Valley Center, died in a local Wichita hospital Thursday, October 17, 1947. She was born July 15, 1866, at Pittsburgh PA, and started teaching at Lyons KS in 1903. She taught at McPherson KS, McAlester OK, Pittsburg KS, and Columbus KS, prior to assuming the post of instructor in English at Emporia High School in August 1917, a position she held until she retired April 10, 1939.
Miss Schmalzried graduated from the University of Kansas with a Bachelor of Arts degree. She did post graduate work at the University of Chicago and the University of Wisconsin. Coming to the Wichita area soon after she retired, she was a member of the First Methodist Church in Valley Center.
Surviving are three sisters, Mrs. Caroline Frederica Davison, Valley Center KS; Mrs. Emma Knechtel, Lawrence KS; and Mrs. Agnes Loudon, Los Angeles CA. Also surviving are three brothers, Louis David Schmalzried, Los Angeles CA; George Frederic Schmalzried, Dighton KS; and Frank Schmalzried, Los Angeles CA.
Funeral services held at the Downing chapel at 1PM on Saturday, Dr. Thomas A. Williams, pastor of the First Methodist Church officiating. Burial at McPherson KS.
