Dr. Joseph Paul Guenveur went to his eternal reward at 5:01 A.M. on Monday, June 21, 2010, after spending Father's Day surrounded by his loving family. He was 88.
Doc was born May 1, 1922 in Charleston, SC, to Joseph Paul and Mae Montgomery Guenveur.
He has five brothers and sisters: Ray who was a Mount Horeb optometrist for many years, Virginia, Dorothy and Norma who now live in Syracuse, New York and Leslie (Rosemary) Guenveur of Arlington Heights, Illinois.
Doc attended St. Joseph Grade School and graduated from Immaculate Conception High School in Charleston with the Class of 1940.
He served his country as a captain in the army's ordinance division during World War II.
On May 31, 1947 he married Margaret Furhman of Chicago.
He then graduated from the Illinois College of Optometry in 1949 and moved to Kiel where they were warmly welcomed. He served his community as an optometrist for 58 years until retirement in 2007 when he was 85.
The church was very important to this avid supporter of Catholic education. He left his warm smile, handshake and "high fives" to many a SPPS student at morning Mass. Doc did the early morning weekday Communion Service and was a lector and Eucharistic Minister and catechist. He was involved in the Knights of Columbus since its founding in 1964 and has served as Grand Knight. He was on the Parish Council for countless years, served as president, and then remained on in an advisory position to share his "vision."
"J.P." has also been involved in this community he loved serving on countless advisory boards, the American Legion, and the Kiel Kiwanis Club.
He and his wife, Margaret are the parents of three children, Margaret Guenveur and her partner, Joan McDonald of Haddonfield, New Jersey, Elizabeth Muhs and her husband, Michael of Kiel, and Dr. Paul Guenveur and his wife, Kathy of Menomonee Falls. He was also the proud "Papa" of six grandchildren, Michael Joseph Muhs, Kate Muhs Anderson and her husband, Mitch and Shelby, Ryan, John and Ashley Guenveur.
Please join the family for visitation at Meiselwitz-Vollstedt Funeral Home, 815 6th St., Kiel on Thursday, June 24, 2010 followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church, 413 Fremont St., Kiel. Rev Loren Nys S.D.S., Rev James Jugenheimer, Deacon Pat Knier and Joe Zenk will officiate. Kiel VFW Post #6707 will conduct military services at the cemetery.
"Doc", Paul, "J.P", Papa…. Thank you for the gifts you have shared with us. Well done, Good and Faithful Servant!
