Memorial service for Elmer Russell Harmon, a Northeast Portland resident, will be at 3 p.m. Friday in Willamette National Cemetery.

Mr. Harmon died Monday in a Portland hospital [Veterans Hospital]. He was 61.

A native of Santa [Saint Maries], Idaho, Mr. Harmon served in the U.S. Navy for 18 months during World War II until an injury led to his early discharge. He joined the Merchant Marine in April 1946 and served until his retirement in 1980.

He attended high school at St. Maries, Idaho, before moving to Portland with his parents in 1942.

Mr. Harmon was a member of the Disabled Veterans of America, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.

Survivors include his daughters, Linda Rains of Tualatin and Cheryl Walker of Portland; son, Steven of Burbank, Calif; his companion, Dorleski Gallagher of Portland; brother Edward S. Harmon of Prineville; sisters, Dorothy Hawkins of Portland, Guelda Johnson of Mesa, Ariz., Nelda Johnson of Lewistown, Mont., and Margaret Radabaugh of Aloha; and four grandchildren.

Burial will be in Willamette National Cemetery. The family suggests that rememberances be contributions to the American Cancer Society.

Russ' father was Percy Ray Harmon 1886-1955. His mother was Jennet Merion Harmon 1896-1991. Both are buried at Mount Scott Park Cemetery in Portland, Oregon.
Russell served in the US Navy for 3 years starting on 29 Jul 1944. He then signed up as a merchant marine traveling to Japan, Hawaii and other foreign countries.
He was married twice and had three children.
