Billy the Kid Defender Dies
Mrs. Ann Jennings Championed Outlaw

SANTA ROSA, N.M., Oct. 7 (AP) - Mrs. Ann Jennings, 73-year-old pioneer who defended Billy the Kid, notorious Pecos outlaw, as having been a victim of circumstances, is dead.

She died in her sleep Sunday at her home in Newkirk and the body was taken Tuesday to Panhandle, Tex., for burial. She had been ill for some time and two weeks ago underwent an operation at Tucumcari.

Mrs. Jennings was born at Carlsbad and spent her early life there, in Roswell and in Tascosa, Tex. She became well acquainted with Billy the Kid and with Sheriff Pat Garrett who killed the outlaw.

Mrs. Jennings stoutly maintained that the Kid would not have been a bad boy if it had not been for the law.

Her husband, J.P. Jennings and a daughter, Mrs. Anna Belle Larremore live at Newkirk. Another daughter, Mrs. Walter McDonald lives at Carlsbad.
