In 1897 James went in search of a town in which to open a produce market choosing Niles, Berrien Co.MI. On April 1,1897 they opened what would become a fixture in Niles until it's closing in 1956. It started as a fruit & vegetable market evolving into a tobacco, ice cream, candy & hamburger spot named BASSO'S. It was a family-owned affair, being operated by son Charles & wife-Laverne after the passing of James in 1944. Anna and James are buried in the family plot at Calvary Cemetery in Niles, MI
