Giacomo James "Jack" Basso was born at Neirone, Genova/Genoa, Italy March 13, 1860. He, along with his father Augustine, immigrated to the US arriving at the Port of NY April 1, 1880 settling in Chicago, IL.

He married Anna Brizzolara 08 Nov 1885 at The Church of the Assumption in Chicago. They were the parents of Angel (a Son who died at 10 mos of age), Jennie, Louisa Marie, Anthony (Tony), Katherine Marie & Charles Lawrence Basso.

In 1897 they went in search of a town in which to open a Fruit Market - they chose Niles, Berrien Co.MI. In the early days he would drive a horse-drawn cart twice a week to the neighboring South Bend, IN to purchase produce at the wholesale market for the store. The market would later evolve into a larger facility featuring ice cream, candy, tobacco and hamburgers - Basso's! After the death of James in 1944, the business would be operated by their son Charles & wife Laverne. Anna died in 1932 at the age of 65, James was 85 years old when he died in a hospital at Kalamazoo, MI. They are buried in the family plot in Calvary Cemetery, Niles, MI
