THEATER PERFORMER
Mary Clara Cubby, 79, a 30-year resident of Leisure World in Silver Spring and a member of its theatrical group Fun and Fancy, died of a cerebral aneurysm Nov. 24 at Holy Coss Hospital. Mrs. Cubby who began singing and dancing as a young child, was vocal soloist at Leisure World's July Fourth celebration and a performer in numerous musical productions. She also was active in the retirement community's outreach programs. She was born in Wheeling, W.Va. A Washington area resident since 11, she graduated from Hyattsville High School and, for more than 30 years, was a bookkeeper for the Laborers' International Union of North America before retiring in 1970. Her marriage to Powell Phillips ended in divorce. Her second husband, John F. Moncure Sr., died in 1983. Survivors include her husband, William B. "Pete" Cubby of Silver Spring and Longboat Key, Fla.; a daughter from her first marriage, Pat Pugh-Stanley of Alexandria; two brothers, James Calfee of Cheverly and Kennard Calfee of Chiang Mai, Thailand; and two grandchildren.
