Dorothy Jean was the first-born child of Claud Allen Kirkendall and Frankye Victoria Shearer. Her father worked for Booth Fisheries Company in Seattle and, shortly after Frankye's death, Claud took on management of the company at Prince Rupert in British Columbia, Canada. He died there, in 1932, of pneumonia.

Dorothy's siblings were Martha Ann and Claude, Jr. There was another sister, Betty Jane who was given up for adoption to John Alvin Miller and Maude (MacFate) since Allen Kirkendall was unable to care for the child, who was also sick.

Her mother, Victoria, died in 1920 of child-birth fever and is buried next to her; neither grave is marked. See the wonderful photos provided by Nils M Solsvik Jr. of the area in which they are buried.

Following her mother's death, her father married Rena Mae Barnes, and they had two sons: Richard Jackson and Curtis Franklin Kirkendall.
