After several years his immediate family moved back to Fresno; but Jim was unhappy with the larger schools of Fresno so returned to Avenal; where he lived with his Uncle Roy Dunham's family for a short while till 'Pat' moved his family back to Avenal.

In November 1952 at age 17 Jimmie enlisted in the US Navy; attended recruit training, serving on the USS Blue; V. M. Moore; & Naifeh.
