Governor of Texas. He graduated from the University of Texas in 1942, then joined the US Army and served in southeast Asia during World War II. His first stint in the political arena was as a Democratic member of the State Legislature (1949 through 1957), after which he returned to Uvalde to manage his ranch and other businesses. In 1972 he re-entered politics and was twice elected to his state's highest office. Due to a 1975 amendment to term lengths, Briscoe was the last Texas Governor to serve a two-year term and the first to serve a four-year term. While in office, he focused on efficiency and maintenance of government agencies as opposed to creating new ones. As he and his family had been lifelong ranchers, he worked to help people in the agricultural and livestock industries. He was defeated in the state primary in 1978. Briscoe was the only modern day Texas governor who kept his "no more taxes" promise. After he left politics, he returned to Uvalde to manage his ranching and business interests and was known for his philanthropy.
