Ada Brown Benson A Founder of the Great Falls chapter of the Montana Association for the Blind

Mrs. Ada Brown Benson, Eades Manor, died Wednesday in a local nursing home at the age of 84.

She once gave her formula for accomplishment: "First you think of it for a long time. Then you do it and you do it with others," she said. Mrs. Benson was legally blind. She suffered ulceration of her eyes as an infant. She memorized her school work to hide her growing blindness from her schoolmates, then quit school at 11. She could do limited reading.

"One of the hardest things to overcome is living with a handicap," she often mused, "First accepting it, then doing something about it."

After rearing her family, she attended a summer training school about 1947 sponsored by the Montana Association for the Blind. She returned to Great Falls inspired to form a chapter of the association. She once recalled she walked throughout the city, to the West side and over to Black Eagle for many years to contact blind persons about membership. A primary aim of the the chapter has been to get the blind together with others to combat loneliness.

Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 1 p.m. in Croxford & Sons Mortuary Chapel with Dr. Carlton Buck officiating. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Ada Juliette Daniel was born in 1884 in Shonkin to a minister father and a midwife mother, who had travelled up the Missouri River to the area. She was widowed twice.

She married Norman A. Brown in 1904. The couple lived in Belt until 1915, when they came to Great Falls. They had seven children, but three of them, triplets, died shortly after birth. He died in 1931.

In 1953, she married Philip Benson. He died three years later.

She was a member of Central Christian Church, a past Noble Grand of Myrtle Rebekah Lodge, and a member of Cascade County Oldtimers Association, Pythian Sisters and Eagles Auxiliary.

Surviving are a son, Arthur F. Brown of Tucson; five grandchildren; five great grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
