On July 31, 1923 in Myrtlewood, Alabama, a feisty young child who was to become known as Mary Ola Merrell blessed the home of William Henderson Merrell and Daisy Carter Merrell.

On Monday, May 30, 2016 that young child who had seen almost 93 years of life entered into her eternal rest.

In the years after she moved from Alabama to Texas with her family, they resided in various communities in Polk County including East Tempe, Kickapoo, Onalaska, Lamont and Goodrich. She attended schools in Goodrich and Livingston. In 1940 she met and married Lee Douglas Acuff and they settled near Goodrich and built their home which they shared until his death in 1982. To this union were born three children—Norman Lee "Dutch", William Lamar "Bill or Billy", and Brenda Kay.

Mrs. Acuff served as a homemaker for many years and later worked at Holiday Grocery and Market in Goodrich and then in retail for Howard's and then Walmart where she became a department manager. As a member of First Baptist Church in Goodrich for many years she served as a Sunday School teacher and Vacation Bible School teacher. When pot lucks were being held at the church, people eagerly looked for her pot of chicken and dumplings and her pies. They were always a hit. In addition to her involvement in the church, Mrs. Acuff was very active in her children's school lives, serving as room mother and assisting with various projects or chaperoning during contests. She was an integral part of the FFA supporters and a leader in the local 4-H Chapter.

During times of illness or need, family members and friends within the community could count on Mrs. Acuff to lend a helping hand. Sitting with an ill family member or friend in the hospital or in their home was often one of her support activities. When the church needed food for an occasion, she was always one to step up and do more than her share. As her friends became shut-ins and needed assistance, she could be found doing their grocery shopping or transporting them to medical appointments.

As their children grew up and started their families, Mr. and Mrs. Acuff enjoyed taking their grandchildren on vacations. As her grandchildren gathered at her bedside during her final illness, they enjoyed sharing with her their favorite memories from her home—always an abundance of various treats, Easter and the egg hunts, and the sumptuous meals that she filled the dining table with and many more.

After Mrs. Acuff lost her husband in a work accident in 1982, she continued to live in the family home that they had built together in 1940-41 and continued to work at Walmart. After retiring from her position there, she remained in the family home until she moved to Arlington, Texas to live with her daughter and son-in-law for a brief period. From there she moved to Bay City, Texas where she lived for the remainder of her life. She proudly informed people that she did not live with her son and his wife but rather lived in an independent living apartment in a senior complex just seven minutes from Bill and Judy. She was able to satisfy her love for her cats in her apartment because she was allowed to have pets. The only thing she had to be reminded about where her cats were concerned was that they were not her children as she frequently wanted to tell people. During her residency at The Legacy she became quite adept at bingo and accumulated a supply of Legacy bucks to use for shopping at the Legacy Country Store once a month.

Mrs. Acuff was predeceased by her grandfather, C. R. "Papa" Carter, her parents, the Rev. W. H. and Mrs. Daisy Merrell, her sister, Patsy Ruth Sheffield and her husband S. C. "Goose" Sheffield, her sister Margaret Louise Page, her older son Norman Lee "Dutch" Acuff, and her son-in-law Thomas Lee Hamm.

She is survived by her brother-in-law Hubert Page, her daughter Brenda Kay Acuff Hamm, her son and daughter-in-law William Lamar "Bill" Acuff and Judy, grandchildren Quincy MacDonald and her husband Fred, Toby Hamm and his wife Kasi, Michael Eugene Acuff, Timothy Lamar Acuff and wife Fawn, William Shirl Acuff, Bryan Keith Acuff and his wife Teresa, April Sanders and her husband Elliot, Brett Carter Acuff and his wife Ann, and Brent Lamar Acuff and his wife Tammie. Her great grandchildren include Blayne Brylie, Dustin, Dalton, Dakota, Emmanuel, Elijah, Elisha (Baby Girl), Bailey, Lillian, Jenny, Keisha, Colby, Trinity, and Kyndall. She also was blessed with two great grandchildren. Her nieces and nephews and their families were always important to her. They include Sandra Jones, John Sheffield, Joanie Knebel, Larry Page, and Terry Page. She is also survived by one cousin Glenda Rose Carter and dear longtime friends Pete and Muriel Nelson.
