Barbara Lonas married Henry Helsley in 1796 and left with him from Shenandoah County, VA to settle in Ross County, OH. Upon the death of her husband before 1801, Barbara returned to Virginia with an infant son. On 12 May 1801 she married Henry Surber, who had also lost his first spouse. Henry and Barbara Surber settled in White Oak Township, Highland County, OH.
