Hiram served in the Union Army in Arkansas during the Civil War. He enlisted at Lewisburg, Conway County, as a private in the 2nd and 3rd Cavalry.

Hiram was enumerated in the 1850 Conway County, Arkansas, census, living in Welborn Township with his wife and two sons, Henry and Isaac.

In the 1860 census, Hiram and his large family are living in Lick Mountain Township. In the 1870 census, Hiram was 47 years old, still living in Lick Mountain Township. He died in Lanty, Arkansas (Lick Mountain Township) at the age of 53.

His wife, Elizabeth, who died in 1887, was buried in Adams Cemetery in the Lanty community near the Fawnville Cemetery. It is unknown why Hiram wasn't buried with his wife in Adams Cemetery. Several of their children are also buried in Adams Cemetery. Her father, Isaac Greer is buried in Fawnville Cemetery.
