Nelson served as a Private with the 198th Coast Artillery (A.A.) Regiment, U.S. Army during World War II.

He resided in Wilmington, New Castle County, Delaware & was a member of the Delaware National Guard prior to the war.

His National Guard unit was called into full time active Army service on September 16, 1940, prior to the war, from Wilmington, Delaware. He was noted, at that time, as being Single, without dependents.

Nelson was killed by accident at Stirling, Treasury Islands during the war.

He had served in the Army for four years at the time of his death.
