Master Corporal, 1 Canadian Field Hospital, based at CFB Petawawa. She was a medical technician serving with the Task Force Kandahar Health Services Unit, part of the Canadian contingent of NATO forces in Afghanistan.

MCpl Giesebrecht and Pte Andrew Miller were killed when their armoured vehicle struck a roadside bomb in Panjwai district about 20 kilometres southwest of Kandahar City. The two medics were attached to a unit of 1st Battalion, The Royal Canadian Regiment Battle Group that was on its way to deal with a mine that had been found in the doorway of a house. A third soldier was injured in the blast and airlifted to hospital at Kandahar Air Field.

Aged 34, MCpl Giesebrecht was born in Wallaceburg and raised in Chatham, Ontario. She graduated from St. Lawrence College receiving her diploma as a medical technician. She had eight years service in the military and was on her second tour in Afghanistan. Her commanding officer said she was a fit, dedicated and fun-loving mentor and an inspiration for her fellow medical technicians. "Kristal loved life to the fullest. She was a wonderful friend, always opening her heart to everyone in need. Kristal prided herself on her health and fitness, although she always felt the solution to any problem could be found in a box of chocolates."

She received the South-West Asia Service Medal (SWASM) with Afghanistan Bar, and the Sacrifice Medal (Posthumous).

MCpl Giesebrecht leaves behind her husband Matt, stepson Jonathan, her father Dan Brant (Linda), her mother Angela Mercer and stepfather Bill Mercer, sister Shannon, brother Dan, other family members and many friends.

Funeral with full military honours was held on July 6, 2010 at CFB Petawawa.

Canada has now lost 150 military personnel since the Afghanistan mission began in 2002. One diplomat, a journalist and two aid workers have also died.
