Funeral services for Reuben Heldenbrand were held at 11 a.m. today (June 23), at McWilliams Funeral Home in Gallatin. Burial was at Winston Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Gallatin First Baptist Church or the Gallatin Senior Citizens Center, in care of the funeral home.

Reuben Heldenbrand, 86, Gallatin, died Sunday, June 20, 2010, at the Veterans Home in Cameron.

Reuben was born Aug. 22, 1923, the second child of Lawrence and Gladys (Gooding) Heldenbrand in rural Winston, and graduated from Winston High School in 1941.

He was drafted into the Army in November of 1943 and served in New Guinea and Southern Philippines.

He was honorably discharged December 1945, and began his farming career raising cattle, row cropping and hay. Also he was well known in Daviess County for his truck gardening of fresh fruits, vegetables and especially watermelons.

Reuben was a charter member of the National Farmers Organization. He also served as Daviess County Presiding Commissioner. He was a member of the Gallatin Baptist Church.

On Jan. 17, 1975, Reuben married Myrlene Looney of Kidder. They built a new home east of Gallatin next to the land where he farmed and continued his farming operation there until he suffered a massive stroke in July of 1993. Ten years later he moved to the Veterans Home in Cameron, where he passed away.

Reuben was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers: Loren, Robert and Kenneth; and three sisters: Florence, Shirley and Linda Maxine.

Survivors include his wife Myrlene of the home; two sons: Richard Heldenbrand of White Lake, Mich., and Raymond Heldenbrand of Winston; two daughters, Sheila Williams of Birmingham, Ala., and Sheryl Kinnison of Norborne; two step-children, Renee Hood of Gallatin, and David Looney of Austin, Ark.; one brother: Gerald Heldenbrand of Winston; four sisters: Letha Fisher of Gladstone, Bertha Steele of Lithonia, Ga., Virginia Vestal of Odessa, and Francis Mazzucca of Denver, Colo; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
