Wilburn Blankenship 70, of Rakes Ridge, Haysi, VA. died Tuesday December 1, 2009 in Johnson City Medical Center, Johnson City, Tn.
Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late Nickey and Margie Coleman Blankenship. He was a man of many trades, serving in the military and working in the coal mines for 30 years. He was a member of the UMWA and was of the Old Regular Baptist faith, Indian Bottom Association.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son Edward Blankenship; brothers Kelly, Bodo and willard Blankenship; sisters Berchie and Emogene Deel and Patsy Blankenship; one nephew Harold Deel; and nieces Arlene Weeks and Rose Marie Deel.
He is survived by his wife Ruth Blankership; daughters Charlene (Junior) Yates of Birchleaf and Patricia (Tony) Oquinn of Clintwood; one son Wayne (Dalene Deel) Blankenship of Haysi; one grandson Nathan Oquinn; granddaughters Tiffany Blankenship and Chasity and Chelsa Yates; brothers Alvin Blankenship and Freddie Blankenship of Haysi; sisters Delphia Mullins of Birchleaf, Mary Stiltner of Clinchco and Sarah Deel of Haysi.
Funeral Services were held Friday December 4th at Little David Old Regular Baptist Church with Frank Newsome, Eddie Newsome, Jerry Newsome and David Oquinn officiating. Burial followed in the Blankenship Cemetery at Haysi. Grundy VFW Post 7360 conducted military graveside rites.
Pallbearers were Tony Oquinn, Benny Stallard, Junior Yates, Nathan Oquinn, Matthew Blankenship, and Wayne Blankenship.
Honorary pallbearers were Denny Deel, Freddie Blankenship, and Alvin Blankenship.
Haysi Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
