Hugh Gaston III, son of John Gaston and the former Mary Kirkpatrick, was born on July 23rd 1808 at the family home in Richburg, South Carolina. He was named for his paternal grandfather, Hugh Gaston, a veteran of the war for independence.

At the age of 15, Hugh moved with his family to the area around Prairie Bluff in Wilcox County, Alabama. Four years late, while attending school in Abbeville, South Carolina, Hugh met and married Elizabeth Haddon on September 1st 1827. Hugh and Elizabeth returned to Alabama where Hugh acquired a plantation near his parents.

There are no known children born to Hugh and Elizabeth. Hugh departed this life August the 26th 1835 at the age of 27 years, 1 month and 3 days old.
