OC - Clealand 'Clea' Frederick Baker, 92, went to be with his devoted and loving wife, Jene, on Saturday, March 15, 2008.
Jene passed away on February 27, 2008. Inseparable in life, they are now together, in God's eternal peace.
Jene and Clea were married on January 19, 1940, and were devoted to each other and their family during their 68 years of marriage.
After their marriage they lived in Washington, D.C., they moved to Scarsdale, N.Y., in 1952 and moved from Scarsdale Durham, N.C., in 1970, where they lived until 2004. They then moved to Wichita, Kan., to be closer to their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Clea was born in St. Johnsbury, Vt., on April 19, 1915, and grew up in Richford, Vt.
He attended Temple University in Philadelphia, Pa., where he met Jene and graduated with a B.S. in Pharmacy in 1936. He worked for People's Drug Stores in Washington, D.C. before joining the Burroughs Wellcome Company in 1942. He retired from Burroughs Wellcome in 1980 as Vice President, Corporate Planning and Development, a position which included responsibility for addressing company and pharmaceutical industry matters before Congress and federal regulatory agencies affecting the industry.
Clea was a member of the Pharmaceutical Manufacturer's Association where he served as a member of the Advertising Advisory committee, a member and past Chairman of the Pharmacy Relations Committee, and life member and past Chairman of the Public Relations Committee. He was also a life member and past president of the Pharmaceutical Advertising Council of New York, a member of the National Pharmaceutical Council, and a member and delegate of the American Pharmaceutical Association. After his retirement in 1980, Clea remained active as a consultant and wrote a series of articles on research in the pharmaceutical industry.
During their thirty-four years in Durham, Clea served on the boards of the Chamber of Commerce, the Museum of Life and Science, Durham Regional Hospital, the North Carolina Society to Prevent Blindness, the National Headache Foundation, First Union Bank, and was a member and past president of the Rotary Club.
Clea received many awards and tributes from these professional organizations. He was especially proud of his 1999 award for "Outstanding Leadership and Voluntary Service to the 'City of Medicine' Program" in Durham.
Clea was preceded in death by his parents, Caley and Lida Baker.
Clea and Jene were active members of the Scarsdale Community Baptist Church in Scarsdale, N.Y., the Epworth United Methodist Church in Durham, N.C., and the University Congregational Church in Wichita. They were also members of Hope Valley Country Club in Wichita, Kan.
He is survived by two sons, Clealand F. "Fred" Baker, Jr. (Elaine), and Charles E. Baker, (Jim), of Wichita; 3 grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service for Clea and Jene will be held at the University Congregational Church, 9209 E. 29 Street, Wichita, Kan., on Wednesday, March 26, 2008, at 10 a.m.
