She lived with the Rev. Freeborn Garrettson family. Garrettson was first Methodist minister in the area. The plot that Maria is buried in was purchased by Mary Garrettson, daughter of Rev Garrettson. Mary and her mother Catherine Livingston Garrettson donated the property to the Methodist Church that was the first section of the Rhinebeck cemetery. Maria's sister Hannah Akerly and her husband are also buried in this plot.

The four lines on James’s stone at the bottom are from her own poem (“Reflections” 1834):
