ENOLA MAN LOSES LIFE ON HIGHWAY
A 53-year-old Enola merchant was fatally injured last night when he lost control of his automobile and the machine struck a bridge abutment on Highway 107, two miles south of Enola.
Dead is Albert Newman Bell.
He died at Memorial Hospital about an hour and a half after the accident. He was brought to the hospital by McNutt ambulance.
Bell owned and operated a grocery store and service station at Enola.
His son, Neil Bell, was killed before Thanksgiving in 1951 in a highway accident south of Mayflower.
State Trooper Leo Wilcox said Bell passed a truck driven by Jimmy Pearce, 18, of Vilonia and lost control when his auto hit some loose gravel on the newly-coated road. The car skidded into the south abutment of Muddy Bayou bridge.
Wilcox said Bell's car made slight contact with the Pearce truck before it struck the bridge. The truck ran off the road into a ditch, but neither Pearce, nor his twin brothers, Raymond and Ronald, 17, were hurt.
Bell's car was demolished.
He had been to the Beryl community to aid in removing church benches from the Enola Church Christ for a revival scheduled to open July 19. He was traveling ahead of Willard Melton and Coleman Poe, hauling the benches in a truck. Bell had planned to obtain assistance in unloading the benches at the church.
He was born October 04, 1907, at Formosa (Van Buren County) and had lived at Enola 16 years. He was a son of the late Walter and Maggie Wilkes Bell.
He was a member of the Church of Christ.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Mary Heffington Bell of Enola; a son, B.W. Bell of Linwood, Calif.; a brother, Carroll F. Bell of Nolfolk, Va.; three sisters, Mrs. Edna Powell of Black Oak, Mrs. Viola Hundley of Chicago, Ill., and Mrs. Bessie Watson of Bay; three half-brothers, Vernon Bell of Calif., Bud Bell of Missouri, and Roy Bell of Clarkton, Missouri; four half-sisters and four grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements will be announced by McNutt Funeral Home.
