Medical Pioneer. Born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, he entered the US Navy as an Assistant Surgeon in April 1831 and was made Surgeon in December 1838. He was fleet Surgeon of the Western Gulf squadron in 1862, president of the naval medical board in 1870 and appointed chief of the bureau of medicine first Surgeon General of the US Navy with the rank of Commodore in October 1871. He also served as the first Presidential Physician at the White House to residents James Polk and James Buchanan before retiring from the US Navy in 1872.
