Emigrated, with his parents and sisters, Catherine and Anna, to the United States arriving May 29, 1855 at the Port of New York on the ship "Republik".
He married Rebecca Jane Walliser September 25, 1873 in Whiteside County, Illinois.

Together they had seven children of their own, and raised one little girl, Ethel who was a ward of the court, from early childhood.
He was a farmer in Illinois, South Dakota and Kansas.
Klaas was killed in West Mineral, Kansas while driving a team of mules pulling a loaded hay wagon. The mules became frightened by a switch engine and ran, grandpa fell off the wagon and it ran over him killing him instantly.
