The son of George W. and Sarah A. (Jennings) McFarland.
Married Rhodyah Ann (Bates) in 1861. She died in Iowa and is buried in the Hull Cemetery in Boone County, Iowa.
Children: George W., 1862-; Alice A., 1864-; John, 1867-; William N., 1870-; Nancy, 1870- and Charles A., 1874-.
Married Cindella Cromwell, October 14, 1880 in Boone County, Iowa.
Children: James M., 1881-1956; Seymor, 1883-1954; Ida L., 1885-1949; Nora L., 1888-1969 and Rosa E., 1890-1956. They also reared a granddaughter, Mary, 1906-1996.
John Wesley McFarling was in the Civil War, Pvt. Co I 8th Ia Inf and Co D 32th Ia Inf. He was shot in the left hand and lost all of his forefinger and half of his middle finger.
Uncle Ivan said that Grandpa McFarling used to sing, "Old Black Joe", his favorite song. He also played the guitar while Uncle Jim McFarling played the fiddle.
Uncle Ivan recalled that Grandpa was a good-natured man.
I asked Uncle Ivan why the variation in the spelling of McFarland/McFarling. All he told me was that there was a "rift" in the family!
