The son of Levi and Nancy Overturf. He was reared as a farmer and received a limited education and training.
In 1885 he entered into general merchantile business in Elberon.
Married Anna Countryman in 1877
In 1900 he married Phoebe Antrim. Went to Riverside, California, studied medicine with an uncle for one year, returned to Elberon, and worked at the lumber yard for two years. In 1892 purchased a half interest in Elberon drug Store, became a registered pharmacist associating with Perry Overturf. He served as a member of Elberon School board for 17 years, eight years as Justice of Peace, and a Postmaster for many years. A member of I.O.O.F., Rebekahs, Masonic and Consistory Lodge.
