North Eugene High School girls soccer coach Brandy Wormdahl didn't keep in close contact with Lindsay Babb after the star goalie graduated in 2000.

But Wormdahl said memories of Babb's on-field heroics and ability to be a "super inspirational" team leader remain fresh in her mind a decade after Babb last tended goal for the Highlanders. "Lindsay's not a person you forget about," Wormdahl said. "She was a pretty special kid, and she will be terribly missed."

Wormdahl and others this week are grieving Babb's death and recalling fond memories of her after police went to the 28-year-old's north Portland home on Tuesday afternoon and found that she had been fatally stabbed. Authorities characterize the incident as a case of domestic violence and say a man they found injured at the house is suspected of killing Babb.

Portland police Detective Mary Wheat said Babb and the suspect had been involved in a relationship at one time, but that it is unclear whether he was a current boyfriend.

Wheat said investigators will not identify the suspect until he is charged. He is in police custody at a Portland hospital where he's being treated for undisclosed injuries that authorities say are serious but not life-threatening.

Police have not released any additional information about the case.

Meanwhile, a celebration of life for Babb is scheduled for 1 p.m. Sunday at Fuller's Farm rugby field at 2565 S.W. Ek Road in West Linn.

Babb's friends and family have established a memorial fund in her name. Donations may be made to the fund at any Pacific Continental Bank branch or to the Oregon Sports Union, a Portland organization for which Babb played rugby and served as treasurer.

Wormdahl said she hopes that North Eugene High School officials can find a way to memorialize Babb on campus.

"She had a huge impact on our program," Wormdahl said. "She was the kind of kid you dream about having on your team."

Besides being a standout soccer player in high school, Babb also played basketball and was a member of North Eugene's track team.

According to an obituary submitted to The Register-Guard by her family, Babb graduated from the University of Oregon with a degree in sociology.

She played women's rugby for a club team at UO and eventually moved to Portland, where she continued with that sport as part of the Oregon Sports Union program.

Babb is survived by several relatives including her parents, Mike and Valerie Stursa Babb of Kennedale, Texas; brothers Brady and Kasey Babb, both of Texas; and grandparents Sylvia and Randy Prouse and Shirley and Bert Babb, all of whom live in Eugene.
