Leonard Carter was born in Lumberton, Robeson County, NC in 1856, to Alex and Ora Carter. He moved to Odum, GA as a young man, where he met and married Ella Roberson on Dec 16, 1885, the eldest daughter of Jacob and Nancy Hires Roberson. They had one son, Clyde Leroy Carter. Ella died in Oct 1892, when Clyde was only 6 months old. She is buried in Old Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery, Jesup GA. Leonard later married Florence Lee Roberson, the younger "Sister" of Ella.

In 1904 Leonard and Florence completed the Carter Home on Wayne Street. It is one of the oldest homes in Jesup, GA today and is on the Nat'l Historic Registry. A photo of the home was published in the World's Fair edition of the Waycross Journal as, "Beautiful home of Mr. Leonard Carter of Jesup."

While Leonard was vice-president of Jesup Banking Company in 1902, he also had interest in the mercantile and turpentine business and was president of the Jesup Mercantile Company, president of the Santa Clara Cigar Manufacturing Company, VP of Carter-Dorough Piano and Organ Company of Valdosta, and successor to Luden-Bates of Savannah, GA. He was in business with his brothers William J. and Henry B. Carter of Carters, FL (Polk County), taking interest in the naval stores in Hamad, AL, Carters, Florida and in GA. Additionally, Leonard Carter was president of the Liberty Banking Co of Johnston Station, president of the Board of Education of Jesup, and one of three tax assessors of the city.

Leonard was an active steward in the First Methodist Church and a loyal member of the Masonic Lodge. While living in Odum, he was postmaster for several terms. He owned and operated the store in Odum, GA that at one time belonged to the late Seymour Hires and his son Gene Hires. He owned many farms in the county that were eventually passed along to his heirs. He had five grandchildren through Clyde L. Carter, Sr: Hal Wesley Carter, buried on the Carter Plot near him (Find A Grave Memorial# 54099829); Katherine Carter Kicklighter, buried in Pierce County, GA; C.L. Carter Jr., buried in Screven, GA (Find A Grave Memorial# 37948933); Dorothy Marilyn Carter Dawson, buried in Portland, OR; and Faye Carter O'Quinn, still living in Odum, GA surrounded by family. Leonard has many great grandchildren and counting today. He was my great grandfather. By Linda Carter
