Civil War Veteran - Enlisted on August 24, 1863, at Mannsville, New York, and mustered on September 3, 1863, into Company D, 20th New York Cavalry (Union). Enlistment Rank: Private.

The Regiment left the State for Washington, D. C., on September 30; thence moved to Portsmouth, Va., by Detachments in October and November 1863. Attached to United States Forces, Portsmouth, Va., Dept. of Virginia and North Carolina, to January 1864.

Battles, Skirmishes, and Engagements: Duty in the Defenses of Portsmouth, Va., November 1863, to December 1864. Action at Smithfield, Va., February 1, 1864. Battle of Five Forks. Appomattox Court House April 9. Surrender of Lee and his army. Duty in the Dept. of Virginia till July. (Co. "D" at Fort Pocahontas from December 1864 to June 1865.

Mustered out and honorably discharged from service on July 31, 1865, at Manchester, Virginia.

Filed for Invalid Pension on July 26, 1890 (Application No. 833602 and Certificate No. 625997). His wife filed for a widow's pension on March 28, 1894.

He was married to Anna Mary Sawyer, on 19 Sep 1849, in Richland, Oswego, New York, United States. They had 5 sons, Wilber J., Frank James, John Charles, George Edward, and Fredrick Everett Bicknell.
