Justin Herbert Brande, 82, died peacefully in his home in Cornwall, with his wife, Susan, at his side, on April 11. He was born on Memorial Day, 1917, in Chicago, the son of George and Dorothea Brande. His mother was the author of the best-seller ""Wake Up and Live." He received a degree in philosophy at Williams College and in 1948, he married Susan Kennedy. They moved to Cornwall in 1951, where they ran a dairy farm and raised their family. In the late 60s Justin sold his herd, returned to school, and earned his masters degree in resource economics at UVM, where he later taught in the environmental program. He played an important part in the formation of the Lake Champlain Committee, the Vermont Natural Resources Council, Act 250, and the Smallholder's Association. Justin was always a strong advocate of sustainable agriculture and keeping farms and businesses small. He believed that there should never be anything created that is truly ""waste" and he enjoyed teaching people how to make compost. He leaves behind his wife, Susan; eight children: Dorothea, Susan, Justin C., Frederick, Angela, Hilary, Thomas and Herbert; and 22 grandchildren; and his AFS son, Abdol Alim Issa. A service to celebrate Justin's life will be held at St. Stephen's Church in Middlebury on Wednesday, April 26, at 2 p.m. Instead of flowers, gifts in Justin's memory may be made to Addison County Home Health and Hospice Inc., P.O.
