MOUNT VERNON — James B. Waddell, 85, of Crystal Avenue, Mount Vernon, passed away Saturday, Jan. 3, 2009, at the Country Court Nursing Home.
He was born Aug. 3, 1923, to the late Bernard and Velma (Spicer) Waddell. James was employed at Owens Corning. He was a member of the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Bricklayers Union, and St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. James served in the U.S. Marines Corps during World War II in Iwo Jima and the South Pacific.
He is survived by two daughters, Brenda (Jan) Pembrook of Gambier and E. Lynn (David) Stryker of Gambier; two sons, James (Chong) Waddell of Fayetteville, N.C., and Thomas (Susan) Waddell of Mount Vernon; 16 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter; a sister, Louise Hunter of Mount Vernon; and two brothers, Charles (Margo) Waddell of Mount Vernon and Homer Waddell of Mount Vernon.
Besides his parents, James was preceded in death by his wife, Eunice Waddell; a daughter, Deborah Ann Waddell; two sons, Joseph Waddell and Christopher Waddell; a sister, Ruth Strauser; and two brothers, Jack Waddell and Roger Waddell.
Friends may call on Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home with a rosary to follow at 8 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday at 10 a.m. at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. Father Stephen Metzger will be celebrant. Burial with military honors provided by the Knox County Joint Veterans Council will follow in Calvary Cemetery.
