Robert A. Harris
Funeral services for Robert A. Harris, 78, of Navasota, were held Dec. 31 at the First Baptist Church in Navasota with the Rev. Dr. J.W.L. Adams of Bryan officiating. Burial followed in Forest Park Lawndale in Houston under the direction of Nobles Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Ross Poteet of the First United Methodist Church in Navasota officiating.
Mr. Harris died Dec. 28 at Grimes St. Joseph Regional Health Center in Navasota.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Annie (Olephant) Harris; and his wife, Billie (Mize) Harris.
Mr. Harris was born Nov. 5, 1923 in Navasota. He was a retired rancher and funeral director, a lifelong resident of Navasota and a member of the First Baptist Church in Navasota.
He was president of the first FFA Chapter of Navasota High School, chairman of the Grimes County Chapter of the American Red Cross for many years, organized the Grey Ladies to do volunteer work at the Navasota hospital, served as president of the Navasota Retail Merchants Association and served as chairman of the Grimes County A.S.C.S. Committee. He served on the Navasota Independent School District Tax Equalization Board, the Grimes County Child Welfare Program Board of Directors, as chairman of the board of directors of the Bryan Production Credit Association for a number of years, on the advisory board of the Credit Banks of Texas in Austin, and as quartermaster of Post 4006 VFW before, during and after the building of the Post Home in Navasota.
He was an honorary lifetime director of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, where he served on many different committees beginning in 1958 and continuing for many years.
He served in the Texas Funeral Directors Association and belonged to Navasota Lodge 299 AF&AM RAN Jerusalem Council No. 7, Navasota commandry No. 80 Knights Templar, 32 KCCH, Scottish Rite Freemasonry, member of Arabia Temple A.A.O.N.M.S. of Houston and Sons of Hermann Lodge of Washington No. 178-2.
Mr. Harris graduated from Armored Command School at Fort Knox, Ky., and was a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army in Europe and the Pacific Theater of Operations during World War II.
He was a 1945 graduate of Texas A&M University.
Mr. Harris is survived by his son, Robert Scott Harris of Katy; his daughter Lynn Harris Dodd and her husband, George, of Navasota; a brother, Earl Leslie Harris and his wife, Jerry, of Jackson, Miss.; two grandchildren, two great grandchildren, a niece, a nephew and numerous other friends and relatives.
Pallbearers were Clint "Bubba" Moser of Mt. Vernon, Clif Kennedy, Sam Seidel, Kurt Thormahlen and David Batcheler, all of College Station, and Colin Lackey of Bellville.
Honorary pallbearers were A.W. Davis of Bryan, John Noble Ratcliff of Anderson, Dr. Richard Winters of Brady, Frank Litterest of College Station, and James White, Lloyd Pool, W.J. Terrell, Dr. Johnny Webb and Butch Keith, all of Navasota.
