Prized above all else, he was honest and kind. He was an educated man, at home in the natural world, resourceful and creative. With an innate talent for linguistics, he served his country well and was an excellent protector and provider for his family. He loved flying and Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. As a young man he discovered and named a new species of family Taeniidae parasitic on bald eagles, and made lifelong friends in college. He was "interviewed" by the gestapo in Algiers, "rolled" by a British soldier for his jeep in Italy, risked his life to retrieve his Leica in Korea and created a Hmong language course for the Thai Border Patrol. He restored his son's '64 Giulietta, and built furniture for his daughters; he built a sled and carved a rocking horse for his grandsons. An avid traveller, his retirement desire was to see the country in an Airstream, staying and going as the impulse struck. He was loved and respected, and he is missed more each day. 4 Oct 2013
