MCALISTERVILLE - John J. Varner, 88, of RR2 McAlisterville, died at 4:15 a.m. Saturday, May 3, 2003, at Brookline Manor, where he had been a resident since
Feb. 11, 2003.

Born July 6, 1914, in Fayette Township, Juniata County, he was a son of the late Phillip C. and Ida (Wagner) Varner. His wife, Leona I. (Landis) Varner, whom he married June 20, 1934, preceded him in death on Aug. 22, 1993.

Surviving are: children, Robert C. Varner and wife Maxine, Richfield, and Ruth Ann Benner, McAlisterville; a brother, Emory Varner, RR1 Richfield; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Amos Varner and Charles R. Varner, and three sisters, Amelia Hepner, Bernice Amey and Mary Amey.

In earlier life, he was a self-employed carpenter and later retired from Precision Ware, RR1 Thompsontown in 1977, after more than 20 years of service.

He loved to build things, being a carpenter all of his life, especially buggies and horse carts.

His funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday from the McAlisterville Chapel of Brown Funeral Homes, Inc., 16 Westfall St., McAlisterville, with Rev. Ronald E. Landis and Rev. C. Richard Beach officiating. Interment will be in Goodwill Cemetery, RR1 McAlisterville.

Friends may call from 4-9 p.m. today at the funeral home, with family present
from 7-9 p.m
