Martha Jane was the 10th child in a family of 12 children. At the age of three, she moved, via covered wagon, with the family in 1873 to DeKalb County, Missouri until the Spring of 1876 when the family moved to Reno County, Kansas. Moving again in September 1877, the family settled on a claim that is five miles southwest of the present site of Stafford in Stafford County, Kansas. A sod house was built on the homestead and the family set up housekeeping there. The raw prairie land was converted to rich farm land.

She married on Nov. 12, 1903 to William Thomas Buckle, with whom she bore two children. The Buckle farm was located 3 miles west and two miles south of Stafford, Kansas.

Quoting the Stafford Courier: "Mrs. Buckle was a woman of noble character. Her girlhood was spent in dutiful occupation about the home as a willing helper during the trying times of pioneer days. She was kindly and generous in nature, dependable at all times, and held the love of the members of the family to an exceptional degree...As a wife and mother she showed true worth, being always concerned about the welfare of the family and the home. She was highly esteemed by her neighbors, and her passing away will be mourned by all who knew her."
